Why QR Codes Expire and How to Avoid It

Updated October 12, 2026 2 min read

Many business owners only notice their QR code stopped working after hundreds of stickers and flyers are already printed. Technically, a QR code has no expiry date. The cause is almost always the type of QR code that was used.

Static and dynamic QR codes

A static QR code stores your real data directly in its pattern, such as a website link, a WiFi name and password, or a WhatsApp number. When scanned, the phone opens that destination directly with nothing in between.

A dynamic QR code does not store the real destination. It holds a short link owned by the provider, and the provider's server redirects each scan to the real destination. This lets the destination be changed and every scan be counted, but the code depends entirely on the provider's server.

Why dynamic QR codes stop working

  • The trial ends. Many services offer dynamic codes for free at first, then turn off the redirect unless you subscribe.
  • The subscription is not renewed. Codes you already printed stop with it.
  • The service shuts down or changes its terms. You have no control over a third party server.
  • Tracking. Every scan passes through the provider's server, which can log the time, approximate location, and device type.

How to check a QR code you already have

Scan it and look at the link that appears. If the domain is not yours, for example a short link like qrco.de and similar, it is most likely a dynamic code. The RazhaQR scanner flags short links like these with a warning before opening them.

How to create a QR code that never expires

  1. Prepare a final destination you control, such as your website, a file in your own cloud storage, or your business WhatsApp number.
  2. Create a static QR code with the RazhaQR generator. The code holds that destination directly with no redirect link.
  3. Test it, then print.

When a dynamic QR code still makes sense

Dynamic codes are useful when you truly need to change the destination after printing very large quantities, or when you need scan statistics for a marketing campaign. For most business needs, such as menus, WiFi, business cards, and WhatsApp contact, a static code with a stable destination is enough and far safer in the long run.
