How to Make a WiFi QR Code for Your Café

Updated October 12, 2026 2 min read

In a busy café, "what is the WiFi password?" can come up dozens of times a day. A WiFi QR code solves it: guests point their camera at the code on the table and the phone joins the network without typing anything.

How a WiFi QR code works

A WiFi QR code stores the network name, security type, and password in a standard format that phone cameras understand. Most phones from the last few years, both iPhone and Android, can join straight from the built in camera app. Older phones can usually use Google Lens.

Because the data lives inside the QR code itself, there is no redirect link and no server in between. The code keeps working as long as the network name and password stay the same.

Steps to create a WiFi QR code

  1. Open the WiFi QR code generator.
  2. Enter the network name exactly as it appears in the WiFi list, including upper and lower case.
  3. Choose the security type. For modern routers choose WPA, which also covers WPA2 and WPA3.
  4. Enter the password. Special characters such as semicolons and colons are handled automatically.
  5. Adjust colors and add your café logo if you like. Turn on Frame CTA and add a short message such as "Scan for free WiFi".
  6. Download the PNG for printing, then test it with two different phones before printing many copies.

Security tips

  • Use a guest network that is separate from your point of sale and office devices. Almost every modern router supports this.
  • Anyone who scans the code can see the password. Do not reuse a password from another account.
  • When you change the password, create a new QR code and print it again. Static QR codes cannot be edited after creation, which is exactly why they never depend on a third party service.

Printing and placement tips

  • Use at least 3 cm for table stickers. Make wall posters larger because people scan from further away.
  • Use a dark color on a light background with strong contrast. The readability indicator under the preview helps you check it.
  • Place codes on tables, at the counter, and near the entrance. For many tables, use bulk A4 printing to print every sticker at once.

Common questions

Can a WiFi QR code expire? No. As long as the network name and password stay the same, the code keeps working. See also why some QR codes expire.

Do guests need a special app? No. The built in phone camera is enough for most guests.
